smart goals

The top 5 reasons you aren’t reaching your goals and what you can do to change that!

Your goals are not SMART!!!

What makes a great goal? And what is the best method to achieve your goal? Create a SMART goal.

Broken down into 5 sections, this is what makes up a SMART goal!

It is:
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Relevant
T – Time-based

If you are able to set a goal that meets all of these points, it’s a great goal and deserves your key focus and attention.

Pro-tip: Goals should push you out of your comfort zone, but they should also be realistic… A goal should be able to be met if you are willing to put in the sweat equity.

So how do you set a SMART goal? Too many people focus on the end and forget about the process. The best way to achieve your goals is to take one big goal and break it down into quarterly, monthly and weekly milestones. Everything you do should be aimed at moving the needle forward and helping you achieve your BIG goal.

Let’s use an example of income per month, so I can give you a clear example of what a SMART goal looks like and how to achieve it.

Step 1: Setting the SMART goal!

You are currently making $15k per annum and your new goal is to make $24k per annum. It’s a scary goal, but if you put in the work, it is 100% attainable!

Annual Goal: $24k income from freelancing
Quarterly Goal: $6k income from freelancing
Monthly Goal: $2k a month freelancing

  • Is this goal Specific? – YES
  • Is this goal Measurable? YES
  • Is this goal Attainable? – YES
  • Ist this goal Relevant? – YES
  • Is this goal Time-Based? – YES

All of that is great, but without an action plan, it’s just a wish!

Step 2: Creating an Action Plan!

Identify how many hours you are realistically able to work each week. For the purpose of this exercise, let’s say you only have 20 hours each week to spend on client work.

Perhaps you are still working or are a stay at home mom. If you are able to do 2 hours of work in the morning and 2 hours in the evening that’s 20 hours in the week on client work and 80 hours a month. Perhaps you are already working as a VA & it is time to increase your rates. Billed at $25 per hour, you will be able to reach your monthly income goals! If

Step 3: Write your goals down!

Go old school. Pen and paper.

Write out your BIG goal and then break it down. Write down the daily, weekly, monthly & quarterly goals that are going to help you achieve the BIG goal. Make sure it is in a place where you can see it every day.

Step 4: Do one thing every day!

Make sure that you do one thing every single day that helps you get closer to your goals. It could be spending time on a course to increase your knowledge, attending an event to network and connect with people, or simply listening to a podcast that is helpful while you wash the dishes.
